Ayurveda is the ancient Indian system of holistic healing found in the Sanskrit texts, Vedas. Its main aim is to promote good health with a focus on balancing mental well being, body, and spirit. If your body, mind, and spirit are in harmony with the universe, you have good health. If something disrupts this balance, you fall sick. In many places across the world, Ayurveda is considered an alternative medical treatment. According to Vedic philosophy, every universal life form manifests itself in the form of energy. These energies are termed as Doshas. They are formed of the 5 basic elements of the universe- air, water, fire, space, and earth. The 3 Ayurveda Doshas are classified into – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
These 3 Ayurveda Doshas control how your body functions. Vata Dosha comprises of space and air, Pitta comprises of fire and water, and Kapha comprises of water and earth. Everyone is made of a unique combination of these 3 doshas. These doshas are not present in the human body in an equal amount, some people tend to have one or two dominant doshas. When these doshas go out of balance, we tend to develop health issues.
Vata Dosha
Vata Dosha consists of two elements- air and space. This dosha is responsible for all body movements. The attributes of Vata Dosha include dry, cold, and rough. Autumn is the Vata season.
People with Vata dosha have a thin body type. When balanced, these people are known to think out of the box and are creative. While you will find them mostly bubbling with energy, they get easily distracted. Their mood depends on the weather, the people around them, the food they eat. When imbalanced, it makes you anxious, unable to stick to a routine, and afraid of commitments.
Signs of Vata Imbalance Include:
- Dryness of skin, and hair.
- Digestive problems, constipation, and dehydration.
- Anxiety, restlessness, and fidgeting.
Pitta Dosha
Pitta Dosha consists of fire and water. This Dosha is responsible for metabolic processes in our body and body temperature. The attributes include oily, sharp, and hot. Summer season is known as the Pitta season.
The Pitta people have a well structured, muscular built. They are very well structured in life, and if they set their heart to do something they will stop only after they finish the work. These people are innately strong. They have a strong desire to learn and master new skills and are natural leaders. However, Pitta people are short-tempered. They also have an intense appetite. They tend to get angry if they miss their meal.
Signs of Pitta Imbalance Include:
- Acidity, heartburn
- Skin problems like rashes, eczema, redness
- Hot temper, anger
Kapha Dosha
Kapha Dosha comprises of water and earth. It controls the nourishing element of the body. The attributes of Kapha Dosha are stable, heavy, slow, cold, and soft. Spring is the Kapha season.
People with Kapha Dosha are strong and athletic. They tend to gain weight, which can be controlled with regular exercise. These people believe in doing everything in an organised manner, and love sticking to a routine in professional as well as personal lives. Their appetite for food is less than Vata and Pitta dosha people. Kapha people are known for their compassionate and loyal nature.
Signs of Kapha Imbalance Include:
- A feeling of fullness in the stomach, nausea
- Feeling of Lethargy, excessive sleeping, depression
- Cold, cough, and fever
When an imbalance of Dosha occurs, it does not mean the absence of anyone or two doshas. The other two doshas are suppressed compared to the dominant dosha. Each Dosha gives certain characteristics to a person. Diet, lifestyle practices, and exercise based on your unique dosha helps in balancing all the three doshas. These were the 3 Ayurveda Doshas that influence our lives.
